I know. I haven't been around in forever. But guess who got her hard drive back all by herself? And who will now be able to finish all the fics that have been languishing on her computer?

haha ikr the thought of me actually finishing a fic is funny to me too

This week has just been one of those weeks, honestly. I moved into a new place with new roommates because it was a) cheaper b) closer and c) I HATED my old roommate. Someday I will tell you all the long, sorry tale. Anyway, my new roommates are grad students from Thailand and Indonesia and whenever they don't have a paper due the next day (which is often, poor grad students) they bring home a bottle of wine to celebrate something or the other. And they invite me to have a glass or four and I ACCEPT, because SELF CONTROL, HOW DOES IT WORK with the result that, together with being sick, sleeping it off has caused me to miss a lot of work and class. I mean, not a lot and I think quite a bit of it is due to me being sick rather than a total alcoholic but still. STILL. For the first time in my life I've shown up to a class slightly buzzed. Which is actually pretty nice, because it was totally relaxing and I could focus better on what was actually important in my notes BUT THAT IS SO NOT THE POINT OMG. The point is that is howwwww did I sink so low? /woe, sorrow, anguish etc.

Also I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time! It was amaaaazing. I can't wait to see it again and again so I can learn all the lines :D.

This weekend has been unusually busy for me, really. On Friday night I dressed as a pirate wench and went to anime club, which I should really go to more often, because they are full of great people even if they have questionable taste in anime (we watched High School of the Dead. and then Rocky Horror. Saturday was rehearsal and then several hours at a Bengali/Vietamese wedding, which served Chinese food? idek but they also had really excellent champagne of which I partook enthusiastically (because I'm an ALKIE OH GOD) and then my friend and I totally tore up the dance floor. They will seriously have to call in some carpenters, because there is no floor left. For real. And then today, rehearsal again for most of the day.

Oh yeah, I got cast in a Shakespeare play. homg, I really do not post about my life enough. But yeah, it happened, hence the rehearsal. It's my first college play, and I was only in one play in high school, so I'm just thrilled I got cast, honestly.

Also, this is probably because I missed so much work/class, but I've been plagued by this feeling all week that I have to do something important. It's the most annoying feeling in the world, especially considering that I'm pretty sure that I don't. But that's the way these things work, isn't it? You forget about it until remember that it's due tomorrow. It's like the Silence.

oh god oh god oh god

My laptop won't start.

I tried everything; took out the battery and AC adapter, switched the memory cards, tried them one at a time...Nothing. Nothing.

It's pretty old and crappy, but this is a little out of the blue. I'm going to try it with a friend's battery and charger, and then try to take it apart once I get a screwdriver and some electrical tape. I have a netbook and the computers at the school library; all I need is five minutes to get all my files on a disk.

I have my school stuff on a flash drive; I'm not worried about that. But my fics, dozens of them, are all on the hard drive. The only ones on my DropBox are the old crappy ones. This may sound stupid, but that's what I'm really worried about. I was literally 13 words away from finishing a series of drabbles that I was really proud of, that I was going to send over to [ profile] loquaciousquark this weekend. ARGHHH

Anyway, I just needed to vent. I'm sure I'll be able to get the files from the hard drive, but still. SO. NERVEWRACKING.

While I've been enjoying it enormously, something's been bothering me about Suits and it took til the latest episode to put my finger on why.

The characters are lawyers at a large, expensive, private firm. That's fine. But each episode manages to avoid the sort of moral dilemma that should be inevitable in these companies. Lawyers sometimes have to defend the indefensible and ruin the innocent. That's not some sort of judgement I'm laying down; it's just the way it is. Yet at the end of each episode, somehow, the big corporate lawyers were on the side of good. They defended the "perfect" sexual harassment victim pro bono. They cleared the name of the innocent stock trader (also a beautiful woman). They fought on behalf of cancer victims. They championed the honest, working-man engineer to be CEO. When they had to fire an otherwise good man for having faked his qualifications, they discover that actually it was all a conspiracy! By an eeevil company! Wait, what's that? They are the ones representing those evil companies? (The man was fired anyway, which added an interesting and unforeseen layer of complexity, but I find it to be the exception to the rule).

I'm not saying the show should portray lawyers as soulless money-sucking machines. But I think it's a disservice to the plot and the characters to never allow them to face moral dilemmas that don't conveniently reduce to a morally clear ending. I'd like the characters to have to make hard choices.

The more disturbing flip side to Our Heroes Are Always On The Side Of Good is the general treatment of public servants in the law. In the second episode, there was a judge who completely violated impartiality for petty personal reasons. In the latest episode, there are two public defenders, both of whom are portrayed to greater and lesser degrees as villains.

To anyone who doesn't watch Suits, don't get me wrong, I still recommend it. I wonder if this trend will continue into the second season...

This was an argument about the weather...

So I called someone out for calling east coasters "pussies" for worrying about the hurricane. I decided not to even address how much I HATE when someone uses gendered slurs--I've tried this before, and thought that if I pushed it he would blow up--which is hilarious, considering--I pointed that we don't get extreme weather and our infrastructure isn't built for it. He responds with FOUR comments, each progressively more batshit, with more choice comments like "pitiful and pathetic". I responded with one more comment, reiterating my position, and he responded by deleting the entire thing, blocking me, and sending me...this...

The next morning he sent me a sequel!

Anyway, that was my horror story from the hurricane :) Korean class will be interesting on Tuesday!

I don't think I can say anything about this episode that hasn't already been said, but you know what?

I am digging the return of Tiger's first suit and I'm not even sorry. There. I said it.

Not even done with the chapter and I am literally hyperventilating. Oh, Bleach. When you're good, you almost make up for when you're terrible.

Ask me how to describe this whole beautiful thing

I saw Guys and Dolls at Wolftrap this weekend! Let me tell you, guys (and dolls), it was wonderful. I've been searching youtube for song clips ever since.

There's this thing I have with stage plays that I ONLY have for stage plays: the first is always, invariably, the best. I saw a high school production of Inherit the Wind when I was in kindergarten and haven't been able to get it out of my head. I can't even remember most of the songs, but the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera is vastly superior to the movie! (And it probably was, too). If I saw a production of Macbeth performed by the London Shakespeare Company tomorrow, I think I'd sigh and wish they were as good as my high school actors.

This doesn't happen for anything else. I can watch two versions of a movie and admit that the second was better. I fell in love with the 11th Doctor just as hard as I fell for 10. I acknowledge (although it breaks my heart a little to say) that Brandon Sanderson is a better writer for Wheel of Time than Robert Jordan was. But when it comes to the stage, the physicality of being in the presence of the real actors, hearing their voices ring out in real time, close enough to feel their charisma, far away enough that their features are the most handsome in the world, seeing the conductor's hands wave over the orchestra pit and the hush right before everyone in the room bursts into applause at the same time...

Well, what can I say? First is best, as far as I'm concerned, and second is the one with a hairy chest. As I can see it, the movie versions are no good at all--and objectively speaking, Jean Simmons is beautiful but just can't sing very well.

In other news, I am desperately, desperately, trying to finish a fill I posted to a kinkmeme (yes). There are people reviewing me! They're saying things about my writing! My characterization! Good things, to top off this insanity. It's a weird feeling. And if I do finish it, that'll make it the first multi-chapter fic I've actually finished, and I can't even tell you how pathetic that is, given how many years I've been trying to write fanfiction.

I am also desperately trying to find housing before the new school year starts, but man, you do not need to know about that insanity. Really.

Er...does anyone watch Puella Magi Madoka Magika? It''s a magical girl anime. I know! I know.

Anyway, me and my friends group cosplayed as magical girls at Otakon, is what I'm trying to say :P

I'm the sassy redhead with the spear. If you look in the background there's a pokemon trainer...

I'll post with more pictures later! I also cosplayed as Soi Fon (with an index paper shikai, what)

I can't believe I even have to deal with this.

 Dear Lori;

I sincerely think you are the craziest person I know. Please have a care before calling someone a thief. When you call me three times in a morning and I don't pick up, consider that I may be in class. Oh, and while I'm certain that you would have been perfectly willing to "escalate to the next level" in order to get 25 dollars from the grasp of an 18-year-old girl, I'm not sure that a handwritten contract, parts of which you literally crossed out and revised after I signed, would hold up in court.

However, I wish you best of luck in future ventures. Please get out of my life forever.

The Glow Worm.

Sadly, I will not be sending that letter. Writing it made me feel better though.

Emotions and everything else

I had, earlier, almost posted the most maudlin dribble I have ever written in my life: all about my slowly breaking heart and how he is probably into this amazingly cool Korean bartender and how I just want to curl up in bed and cry. But now I feel silly--because actually, my heart isn't broken. I finally told him how I feel and he was basically incredibly sweet: told me that with his relationship with his long-distance girlfriend going downhill he hasn't been fit to like anyone more than friends, but that he felt really close to me and that he was happy, really happy that I liked him that much. He's already looked up how much tickets are from his native Sweden to the U.S. :) conclusion, I am a teenage girl. Shock

I miss him, though. I should be looking forward to starting college next week so that the little pangs in my stomach will go away, but to be truthful, I'm not. Because whenever I start to miss him I also start to think of the timbre of his voice, the feeling of his skin against mine, what we did or said or laughed about together. And I can't do that in public because I start to smile at his memory, and I don't want anyone to ask why I'm grinning like the happiest fool on planet earth.

Other news, in brief:

1. I just spent the entire summer in Korea, which is where I met...the subject of this entire post. Korea was amazing in every way.

2. My annoyingly slow-going Bleach fanfic is now at least partly about socialism. lol

3. After apps and APs and god knows everything else, I am fucking going to college. I am going to get an overpriced education! Fuck yeah. Fuck yeah.

I am done done done with APs. Unless I choose to take some sort of Biology AP to fulfill American University's general education requirement for science, which I might because I don't want to take Biology 1 all over again but never will I stoop so low to take..."Great Experiments in Biology." I don't understand why colleges feel the need to dumb the sciences down for humanities people. Yes I am an international relations major, but I am fully capable of understanding how cell division works, thank you! I just don't remember at the moment!

In any case, doesn't it defeat the purpose of general education requirements to debone a class like that?

I'm probably just bitching because I want to skip biology and dive straight into human anatomy. That sounds like fun.

Hmm. I just read that sentence over again.

I am happy to be going to American University though. It's close to home, but then again, I live in a DC suburb, and DC is basically the best city in the world, especially for international relations. I'm going on a fairly hefty scholarship, so well done me, and the campus is beautiful and did I mention, located in the best city in the world? Just today there were European embassy open houses, and my friend and I strolled around Embassy Row. Most of the embassies were more interesting on the outside than the inside, but Finland had a Lord of the Rings exhibit and delicious meatballs. MEATBALLS, I SAY.

We also passed by a used book store and bought a huuuge book of dirty limericks for four dollars, which I have hidden where my parents will never find it. A few of the chapter titles: "organs", "strange intercourse", "oral irregularity", "buggery", "abuses of the clergy", "excrement" followed by "gourmands", "virginity", followed by "motherhood" and "prostitution", "diseases", and most ominously, "chamber of horrors".

Afterwards we went by the National Cathedral and felt guilty.

Oh, to hell with it!

There once was a priest of Gibraltar
Who wrote dirty jokes in his psalter.
          An inhibited nun
         Who had read every one
Made a vow to be laid on his altar.

That is all.

holy shit guys there is going to be an Avatar sequel. My dreams are literally coming true. And if you say figuratively I will punch you like Admiral Zhou

I want to know what happened to Ursa and if any Air Nomads survived. I want to see more Azula...even though she's crazy...and Ty Lee because she is awesome and obviously the main gang--but seriously guys. At this point I would even be happy to see second gen

Ooh! I want the Painted Lady to make an appearance again, because that was ridiculously badass and of course Koh the Face Stealer. I want Sokka and Suki to get married (shut up) and Katara and Zuko to share a....moment (shut up) and Toph to have awesome adventures and be worshiped as a goddess in some far-off land (can I get a HALE YEAH?)

My fingers are crossed so hard right now that I think they are twisted into a semi-permanent rictus. Kung fu action jesus, don't let me down now.

My first con

Man, Katsucon was fun! The hotel was fantastic--I cannot believe they got the Gaylord omg. But I am so exhausted, let me tell you.

I took a lot of pictures but they were all on my friend's camera so I'll probably post them later. I dressed up as the Painted Lady--a lot of people recognized me! I was really surprised, because I thought my cosplay was crap. I literally used dollar store makeup and a camping tarp I found at the last minute. But a lot of people really liked my costume and took pictures of me, which was flattering but a little creepy. Well, I took a lot of pictures of cosplayers too, so whatev.

I got:

A Bleach poster (of Ichigo and Rukia in street clothes! :D)
The coolest FLCL poster ever
A Code Geass and a Death Note poster for my cousin
FLCL fanart print
a pin of Hitsugaya
A sticker of chibi!Zuko

Zuko's sticker is the swag that I am proudest of getting, btw. I got it when I talked a friend of mine into getting some really fanservicey prints despite a promise to herself not to, and the fanartist was offering a free chibi sticker for every two prints bought. She wasn't interested in any of the characters, so she came away with Zero Suit Samus, Ceci from Code Geass eating pizza (suggestively, lol), and the mark of shame burning on her forehead, and I came away with chibi!Zuko and a good lesson: be a terrible person and the universe will reward you with fanart.

 It's snowing again. How fun.

Out my window not a soul is in sight, and the snow is swiftly blanking out all vestiges of civilization. Already our little suburb resembles a post-apocalyptic tableau. It's sort of fun: I feel like an action heroine, writing livejournal entries in the desperate, vain hope that someone on the eastern seaboard is still alive...

It's probably bad of me to hold a tiny little hope that the power will go out, but I always associate blackouts with warmth and family. We'll light the fireplace, and Mom will make sure everyone has way too many blankets. Dad will roast potatoes and I will read books by the light of the fire. Except, unlike every other time we've had a blackout, my brother won't be there, so I guess it wouldn't really be the same. (He's currently in Minneapolis, laughing at us poor Virginians who have already exceeded our yearly budget for weather clearance.)

Hey, does anyone understand what Google Buzz is? Anyone at all? Because I like Google and all, but they keep coming up with weird stuff. I think they're trying to be the little black dress of the internet.

*glances outside* Holy crap, there's a lot of snow out there! It's on the trees, creating the strangest illusion of flowers. It's also on the roads, less pretty and more obstructive. There go my hopes of human contact this week.

Oh and if anyone is in the area--I will hopefully be at Katsucon this weekend! My first con :D

So I got into Bleach and long story short I'm writing a fanfiction and I wish I wasn't.

(The long story, less short, is that I watched 200~ episodes in a week and a half and possibly sacrificed my chances of getting into college.)

It has been a long, long time since I wrote for an anime. I find myself hopelessly bewildered: no longer the bright-eyed fangirl I was back in the Inuyasha fandom, I am determined to do this right, breaking out my road map and directions from dubious sources, remembering too late that will inevitably get me lost. I find myself typing confidently down a page, only to find that I don't actually remember what sort of relationship a -chan denotes. There's a voice in the back of my mind telling me to just pull over and ask someone already but I set my jaw because I totally know what I'm doing although I don't and really, really wish I bought a GPS system.

Also I'm refreshing my memory of the characters off fan essays and that's probably a really bad idea. It'll probably land me somewhere in Illinois and Midwestern farmers will gather around me as I pratter to them about Orihime's fairies or something and they'll say things like "You're not from around here, are ya?" And then I will shock the town with my scandalously modern attitudes towards music and dancing. They'll try to keep me down, but I'll win them over with a passionate, Biblically laden speech to the town council where I will proclaim that this is our time to dance! The reverend's daughter and I slowly fall in love, and then everybody cuts--

Where was I going with this metaphor again? I think I got lost.
