So my friends think I think they're shallow (they pretty much are) and that I think that it's a bad thing (I don't). Sigh. I'll need to lob them a copy of Oscar Wilde, Picture of Dorian Gray some day.

In other news:

I love how the Germans have such beautiful words for such abstract phenomena. Like, for example,  genenschein, which is the brightening of the sky directly opposite a solar eclipse, or alpenglow, the brightening of the east during the sunset, or heiligenschein, which is actually a sort of halo around your shadow. My particular favorite is sylvanshine, which is when trees appear to be covered in snow in the middle of summer.

Sylvanshine. Just say it--It's lovely.

I'll have to add all of these to my list of Things To See Before I Die, which already includes the glass wing butterfly and the entire series of Planet Earth.
